"The (New) Golden Rule"
One of the most well known and most often quoted beliefs of Christianity is the "Golden Rule" – taken from the words of Jesus when he spoke by the Sea of Galilee in what we call "The Sermon on the Mount." Most of us grew up hearing this scripture as recorded in Matthew 7:12 from the King James Version of the New Testament.
"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them…"
A translation in today's language (from the Contemporary English Version) is:
"Treat others as you want them to treat you..."
This statement is profound because it sums up how we are to live on this earth – how we are to react and interact with those around us – both Christian and non-Christian. Still, there was more to Jesus' statement and I believe that "more" was a harbinger of things to come.
Jesus completed that statement by adding, "…for this is the law and the prophets" (KJV); or, as translated in the NIV, "…for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."
Remember that at the time Jesus spoke these words, His Kingdom had not yet come. He had been going all over Galilee – to Capernaum, in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali – preaching "Repent, the Kingdom of Heaven is near." Most of the audience for the Sermon on the Mount were Jews from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan. To these Jews, keeping the Law (The Law of Moses) and of the Prophets was the capstone of their faith – all their beliefs were inseparably wrapped up in keeping the Law.
However, today, Jesus Kingdom has come – we are living in the age of grace and in a time when God's gift of forgiveness and salvation through the acceptance of His Son Jesus has been fully revealed to the world by Scripture and by the Holy Spirit. The capstone of our faith is not the Law and the Prophets; the capstone of our faith is Jesus the Messiah. In light of God's wonderful gift of eternal salvation through His Son, I humbly suggest that Christians think of the "Golden Rule" in a slightly different way.
"Treat others as you want God to treat you... for this sums up the love and forgiveness of our Lord Jesus Christ."
