"The (New) Golden Rule"

One of the most well known and most often quoted beliefs of Christianity is the "Golden Rule" – taken from the words of Jesus when he spoke by the Sea of Galilee in what we call "The Sermon on the Mount."  Most of us grew up hearing this scripture as recorded in Matthew 7:12 from the King James Version of the New Testament.

"Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them…"

A translation in today's language (from the Contemporary English Version) is:

"Treat others as you want them to treat you..."

This statement is profound because it sums up how we are to live on this earth – how we are to react and interact with those around us – both Christian and non-Christian.  Still, there was more to Jesus' statement and I believe that "more" was a harbinger of things to come.

Jesus completed that statement by adding, "…for this is the law and the prophets" (KJV); or, as translated in the NIV, "…for this sums up the Law and the Prophets."

Remember that at the time Jesus spoke these words, His Kingdom had not yet come.  He had been going all over Galilee – to Capernaum, in the area of Zebulun and Naphtali – preaching "Repent, the Kingdom of Heaven is near."  Most of the audience for the Sermon on the Mount were Jews from Galilee, the Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea and the region across the Jordan.  To these Jews, keeping the Law (The Law of Moses) and of the Prophets was the capstone of their faith – all their beliefs were inseparably wrapped up in keeping the Law.

However, today, Jesus Kingdom has come – we are living in the age of grace and in a time when God's gift of forgiveness and salvation through the acceptance of His Son Jesus has been fully revealed to the world by Scripture and by the Holy Spirit.  The capstone of our faith is not the Law and the Prophets; the capstone of our faith is Jesus the Messiah.  In light of God's wonderful gift of eternal salvation through His Son, I humbly suggest that Christians think of the "Golden Rule" in a slightly different way.

"Treat others as you want God to treat you... for this sums up the love and forgiveness of our Lord Jesus Christ."

Don’t Copy, be yourself...

An inspirational speaker said:"Best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman, who wasn't my wife."Audience was in shock and silent. He added: "She was my mother." A big round of applause & laughter!

A very daring husband tried to crack this at home. After a dinner, he said loudly to his wife in the kitchen: "Best years of my life were spent in the arms of a woman, who wasn't my wife", standing for a moment, trying to recall the second line of that speaker.

By the time he gained his senses, he was on a hospital bed, recovering from burns of boiling water!

When Others Disappoint You

When Others Disappoint You
Os Hillman

"Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica" (2 Tim 4:9-10).

Adversity molded the apostle Paul into the greatest warrior for Christ the world has ever known. But there were times when adversity and disappointment took its toll on this rugged warrior. We can sense Paul's hurt and discouragement near the end of his second letter to Timothy:

Do your best to come to me quickly, for Demas, because he loved this world, has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica... At my first defense, no one came to my support, but everyone deserted me... Do your best to get here before winter (4:9-11,14,16,21).

Do you hear the pain in those words? Twice he urges Timothy to come to him. Do you feel his anguish when he twice speaks of being deserted by his friends?

In most of his letters, Paul seems to have an invincible spirit. Yet he was a man who suffered, felt betrayed, and was at times very lonely. However, Paul chose to look at life from a heavenly perspective. That's why he could write:

We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body (2 Cor. 4:8-10).

Paul had experienced a level of opposition and suffering that you and I can scarcely imagine. People said they would do things but did not follow through. He could not depend on certain people. Yet he was not crushed, and he refused to give in to despair. He viewed his life as a continual process of dying. His goal was to live in such a way that the life of Jesus would be revealed in his response to adversity.

Beware of placing too much expectation on others. Realize that people will let you down from time to time, but do not let that impact your faith. Trust God to work even through these disappointments.

Your emotions are the shallowest part of your nature.
Salvation is the deepest work of God.
He is not going to do His deepest work in the shallowest part

FW: The Depth and Width of Your Calling

The Depth and Width of Your Calling

"If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are
comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance
of the same sufferings we suffer." - 2 Corinthians 1:6

"God must love you a lot! He doesn't allow someone to go through the kinds
of adversity you have experienced unless He has a special calling on your
life." Those were the words said to me by two different mentors at two
different times within a three-year period. Later I would learn another
related truth from a respected man of God - a man who lives in another
country, a man whom God uses throughout the globe. "The depth and width of
your faith experiences are directly proportional to your calling." What
were these men of God saying?

They were describing a process of preparation that God takes each of His
leaders through when He plans to use them in significant ways. A "faith
experience" is an event or "spiritual marker" in your life about which you
can say, "That is where I saw God personally moving in my life." It is an
unmistakable event in which God showed Himself personally to you. It was
the burning bush for Moses; the crossing of the Red Sea or the Jordan
River for the nation of Israel; Jacob's encounter with the angel. It was
the feeding of the 5,000 for the disciples. It was the time when you saw
God face to face in your life.

If God has plans of using you in the lives of many others, you can expect
that He is going to allow certain faith experiences to come into your life
in order to build a foundation that will be solid. That foundation is what
you will be able to look back on to keep you faithful to Him in the times
of testing. Each of us must have personal faith experiences in which we
experience God personally so that we can move in faith to whatever He may
call us. Do you need a personal faith experience right now in your life?
Pray that God will reveal Himself to you. He delights in doing that.
